Dr. Anirban Sengupta, currently Professor & Director, Centre for Healthcare Management, ASCI, holds a PhD from University of Pune; Masters in Management Studies from NMIMS, University of Mumbai, Mumbai and Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He has nearly two decades of professional experience - evenly spread out between industry and academics. Over the years he has held leadership positions, in industry and academics, across high-growth sectors of credit rating in the early 90s, retailing in early 2000 and currently healthcare.
As Director of the newly launched Centre for Healthcare Management (CHM), ASCI - Dr. Sengupta is driving ASCI’s initiative of successfully establishing itself in the healthcare space. Buoyed by several research indicators projecting the healthcare sector as the next growth story from India, the CHM is leveraging ASCI’s expertise in successfully running a postgraduate programme dipiloman in hospital management to emerge as a leading think-tank in the overall healthcare sector. CHM is expected to launch new training programs of various durations in the coming days as well as provide research and advisory services in this area.
Dr. Sengupta had been a senior member of the India-start-up team of FITCH Ratings – the first of the Big Three credit rating agencies to enter India in 1996 through Duff & Phelps Credit Rating USA (taken over by FITCH IBCA in 2000 to form FITCH Ratings). He served as a member of the Rating Committee of FITCH India and as Vice President, he played a key role in establishing the start-up operations of the agency firmly in southern and eastern Indian market. Earlier he been with CRISIL (presently the Indian arm of Standard & Poor, USA) – and has undertaken more than hundred rating assignments across a wide range of industries during his eight years’ association with CRISIL and FITCH.
His tryst with Retailing commenced as an academic in 2001 and culminated into a continuing long standing relationship with IIM Kozhikode as Visiting / Adjunct Faculty for the elective course Retail Management since 2005. He also served as Visiting Faculty to IIM Indore for three successive academic years starting from 2004. He earned his PhD in the area of evolution and growth of organized retail in India. Besides the IIMs, he has been a Visiting Faculty to other leading business schools like XIM Bhubaneshwar, FLAME School of Business, Pune; GITAM Institute of International Business, Vishakhapatnam and a full-time faculty at Goa Institute of Management. He has also served as Visiting Professor to Faculty of Applied Economics, University of Antwerp, Belgium in November 2007.
Before taking charge as Director, Center for Healthcare Management, Dr. Sengupta had been Professor of Marketing, Center for Management Studies, ASCI – having training interest in the areas of strategic, cross-functional and cultural aspects of marketing, with special interest in public sector organizations.
